In Switzerland, several owl species can be spotted, including the Tawny Owl, Barn Owl, and Ural Owl. These birds have specialized diets consisting primarily of small mammals, insects, and occasionally birds. Owls are known for swallowing their prey whole and regurgitating pellets of indigestible material such as bones, fur, and feathers. When an owl consumes its prey, the food enters its digestive system and travels down the esophagus to the stomach. Owls have a unique digestive system that consists of two parts: the glandular stomach and the gizzard. The glandular stomach is responsible for secreting digestive enzymes that start breaking down the food, while the gizzard is a muscular organ that grinds up the food into smaller pieces. Once the food is broken down in the stomach, it moves on to the small intestine where nutrients are absorbed. Owls have a relatively short digestive tract compared to other birds, as their diet consists of high-protein foods that are easily digestible. After the nutrients are absorbed, the remaining indigestible parts such as bones, fur, and feathers are formed into pellets in the owl's stomach. These pellets are then regurgitated through the owl's mouth, allowing them to effectively expel waste material from their bodies. Overall, owls in Switzerland have remarkable stomach and digestion processes that enable them to efficiently extract nutrients from their prey while discarding indigestible material in the form of pellets. Observing these magnificent birds in the wild can provide valuable insight into their unique feeding habits and digestive biology.
